A couple years ago, all the Starbucks around here did a redecoration. They had all these great sconces, I was just wondering: did they throw all that great, reusable stuff out, or if they auctioned it off, or if they donated it?
IF they auction/sell that type of stuff, where can the average Joe-Ann get her hands on it?

Keep your eyes open to the classified ads for auctions. Large cities usually have outlets for all kinds of stuff from hotels, offices, stores, etc. Check out the Yellow pages too.

The rules on this are complicated and you need to go find it on the IRS website. The asnwer is that you can directly deduct those expenses if you hold the for 46 days or longer (and there are a bunch of issues with that that you need to go look up). If you deduct them because you have run afoul of 46 days or some other problem then you have to add them to the cost basis.
